Straight answers about booking, the fishing, lodging, and Louisiana fishing licenses.
Redfishing
Redfish bite all year in Louisiana. Many anglers favor fall, when fish feed hard before winter and big bull reds move through the outer bays and passes. Winter's clearer water is good for sight fishing, and in summer the cooler morning and evening hours are the best times to be out. We run morning and evening trips every day.
Redfish must be between 18 and 27 inches long, and each angler can keep 4 per day. Fish over 27 inches have to be released. Captain and crew can't keep redfish on a charter trip. These are the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries rules as of October 2026, so check the current rules before you go.
Barataria, less than an hour south of the city, is one of the closest places to catch redfish from New Orleans. We run guided redfish charters there every morning and evening. See redfishing near New Orleans.
We fish the inshore marsh, bayous and bays of the Barataria estuary on the Gulf Coast, not the open Gulf. That means a shorter ride and more protected water.
Both are known for redfish. Barataria is closer to New Orleans and fishes protected inshore marsh. Venice is farther south at the mouth of the Mississippi and is known for bull reds and offshore trips. See our Venice vs. Barataria comparison.

On the Water

Redfish and speckled trout are the main targets, along with the other inshore species the Barataria marsh is known for. The season and the conditions decide where we fish each day.

Yes. For fishing groups we can set up a stay at one of a few local houses near the water, so you can roll out of bed and onto the boat. Typical rates start around $75 per person per night and vary by house. Check “Also interested in accommodations” when you book, and we'll follow up with options.
Before You Go
Louisiana requires a saltwater fishing license for anyone 18 or older on our trips. Here's what you need and the easiest way to get it.
Yes, if you're 18 or older. Barataria is south of Louisiana's saltwater line, so your license has to cover saltwater fishing. Anglers 17 and under don't need a license. Louisiana residents born before June 1, 1940 only need the free senior license.
The Charter Passenger Saltwater license. It costs $20 for residents and nonresidents, covers 3 days in a row, and lets you fish from a licensed charter boat with the guide on board. For most visitors it's also the cheapest option. If the purchase asks for the charter guide's license number, call or text us and we'll give it to you.
The charter passenger license only covers fishing from a charter boat. To fish on your own you need a Basic license plus a Saltwater license: $32 a year for Louisiana residents and $128 a year for nonresidents. Nonresidents can also buy a 5-day Basic and a 5-day Saltwater license for $30 each.
Buy it online from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries at wlf.louisiana.gov, or from a store that sells Louisiana hunting and fishing licenses. Louisiana residents can also keep their license in the LA Wallet app. For license questions, the department's help line is 225-765-2898.
